Liza launched PowerUp (Providing Opportunities Where Everyone Rises Up) in 2009. She made her first PowerUp trip in 2010 to Kenya as a goodwill ambassador to inspire children of all ages, demonstrate the societal gains of technology, and contribute to much-needed resources at schools, hospitals, and children’s homes. She met with the Vice President of the Republic of Kenya, the Minister for Justice, and Members of Parliament to discuss her passion for bringing technology to children before they begin school.
The following is a list of the trip’s venues:
- Anajali Primary School in Kibera: Demonstrated the impact technology integration can have on a community; Through HP, donated school computers.
- Kenyatta National Hospital Maternity Ward Visit: Liza was born at this hospital and visited young new mothers to empower and inspire them; sponsored the purchase of a critically needed incubator for transporting newborn children.
- Brookhouse School: Visited as an alumnus to share ideas about careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
- Ongata Rongai Primary School: Visited to speak with students and to help address the school’s sanitation challenges by sponsoring the installation of a new toilet.
- The Annual Mucheru Golf Invitational: Participated in a golf tournament held in remembrance of her father John M. Mucheru’s contributions to golfing in Kenya. Held a golf clinic for children from a nearby slum.
- Cheryl’s Children’s Home: Visited to speak with and inspire children whose families live in slums in Kibera.
- Mind Speak: Spoke at a forum on the launch of PowerUp, nationwide technology integration, the importance of teaching more science, technology, engineering, and math classes in schools, small business innovation, and creating community opportunities with technology.
