An Education Mission from Kenya to Corpus Christi

Liza Wisner is dedicated to improving the lives of the less fortunate. In 2010, Wisner started the non- profit organization PowerUp, which stands for Providing Opportunities Where Everyone Rises Up. PowerUp is aimed at making technology available to children all over the world and to have the resources and opportunities they need to grow up healthy and lead productive lives.

“I believe technology is the future,” Wisner said. “All you need is a laptop to get an education and it increases your ability to get a better job and learn more in life.”

Wisner, who is the Human Resources’ Learning and Development Manager, recently returned from a trip to Kenya where she helped the Ongata Ronkai Primary School get access to running water and get wired for a computer lab. All that’s left to be done is furnish the classroom with technology that the whole community can use.

“For me that’s just life changing,” she said. “Even if one person comes out of there and is able to get a job just from a computer course they took, will be worth it.”

Wisner was born and raised in Kenya, but now Corpus Christi is her home and has similar plans for our local community.

PowerUp is currently working with Metro Ministries to build a computer academy. Wisner also wants to get an old bus and turn it into a mobile computer lab with solar panels on top.

“It’s essentially a classroom on wheels,” she said.
